My husbands family lived on Thornaby Road and had a fancy goods shop there. Their name was Mackay. We as teenagers went to the sadlers and the marys in stockton . My husband and I met in Stockton at the Nights of St Columbia down Church Road, now long gone.
Looking to the left of the Sadler’s pub, two upstairs windows can be see, this was a small flat above a grocery shop, just after our marriage in 1966 my husband and I moved into this flat, we lived there for 3 years, it cost 7/6d (37p) a week to rent.
It contained a lounge, 1 bedroom and a kitchen come bathroom (an old iron roll top bath stood next to the gas stove) in the kitchen there was an original black cast iron fire range, complete with oven, the cat loved sleeping in it. Entrance to the flat was round the back of the shop down a long narrow yard, in the winter nights this yard was dark and creepy, the toilet was also in the yard. Next to the toilet was a long narrow coal house with a low ceiling, the back of this coal house had been used as an air-raid shelter during the war, we discovered gas masks hanging on the walls. Everytime it rained heavy the yard flooded, my husband decided to check out the drains via the man-hole, it was so silted up with coal dust it took him hours to clean it out.
We had lovely views from the flat windows, we could see the 5 lamps, all of Mandale Road facing down to the town hall, also part of the way down George St.
We eventually moved up to the new town centre into a modern flat – no more lighting coal fires. I would dearly love to have that old kitchen range in my present kitchen now.
Mandale Road was a lovely place to live back in the 60s.
The replica of the original lamps made by Head Wrightsons apprentices has been moved.
It is now located at the other end of Thornaby between the Little Boy Park and the Roundel Pub.
