Very sorry to hear Ron Craggs had passed away Tom He was a good friend from the Apprenticeship Days at the Forge, I also knew Jim Mcclure very well and noted his early passing.
I worked at Head Wrightsons between 1951 and 1959 with two years National Service included and can not remember any sports days in that period. The photo is not of Tommy Reece Anon, and I do not recognise Harry McClure from this picture. When I knew Harry Mcclure he was much heavier in appearance Tom Thomas..
I believe Harry made a career of being a PT instructor in the Army in later years.
Sorry guys, it was me who thought it was Tommy Reece, but at least we are starting to get somewhere as to identifying the runners. Is this the Tom Thomas who used to be a young foreman in the Brideyard?
Len/Tom, I think it is Summer 1951,
To Ben Many Happy Returns , 80 today,
To Tom, if you are in touch with Kenny Burton (Perth I understand) give him my regards. Jimmie McClure was also in the Forge Bridgeyard in those days the early fifties
Tom, I remember Ron Craggs well, if my memory serves me right he played for Thornaby Boys Club.
Must be loads of Teessiders in Australia. I had two of my late brothers go there in1948 and 1950, thus I have eleven nieces and nephews there who have in turn boosted the population there. Katoomba, Blackheath, Orange, Nowra, Ulladulla, and various places in Queensland. The last time I was there was in the nineties, but I have shown many young Aussies around Bath, Bristol and Somerset..
Interesting to see who were your cousins, don’t suppose the Peacocks were?
Can’t recall Ron playing for Thornaby Boys Club, however, he did play for a good Head Wrightson team, along with Joffre Earnshaw who incidentally married another cousin, Pat Griffiths.
Barry Brennan ex Head Wrightson and another cousin was also a good local cricketer, playing for Norton.
My wife Stella and I live in the Sydney suburb of Baulkham Hills and often visit friends in Springwood, a suburb not too far from Katoomba.
Stella and I were in the UK last year and spent time with Stella’s sister in Cardiff, we also visited Bath and Wells before spending a week in Saltburn.
Not related to any Peacocks.
Along with Benny Harle, when the Heavy Machine shop was being built we did the foundations for a big machine which would be at the bottom corner nearto where the Ambulance Room was. This would be approx. 1958.
My mistake Len, cousin did cross my mind, although Bob was quite a few years older than you and I. You may have known the late Tommy Proctor who worked in the Machine Shop. He was my wife’s brother in law. In fact his 86 year old wife Sheila is making her first overseas trip and flight and visiting us here in Sydney in October.
I think this Head Wrightson Sports Day took place before 1960. Can anybody identify these runners in the photo. If I was to guess, the guy on the right looks like Ike Waiton who worked in the Thornaby Bridgeyard’s office & the big fellow left looks like Tot Reece from Stockton Forge.
The Head Wrightson”s Sports Day took place on the works cricket pitch, which is now Thornaby F.C.Northern League ground. There was cycle racing as well as athletics

Harry McClure lives at Hook, Hampshire and is a volunteer at the
R.E.M.E. Army museum nearby.

I agree with Ben that it is not Tommy Reece, but disagree on Harry McClure, it is him

Sorry Gran, I lost touch with Ken a few years after one or two computer crashes.
Gran,
Ron Craggs was also a cousin of Jim McClure and I. Unfortunately Ron like Jim passed away quite a few years ago.

Yes Len, I was the young heavy plate shop foreman and very good friends with Robson (Bob) Nicholson who I believe was your uncle.
Cousin Tom, but us fitters from the Machine Shop worked alongside your guys in the Heavy Plate Shop.

The runner leading the race is my cousin, Harry McClure.

Certainly before 1960, I would guess 1950, Harry commenced his national service aged 21 in 1954.
