  1. This photograph illustrates the small geographical area where the Groskop family of Stockton lived in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries before a downturn in local shipbuilding(also the piecemeal nature of such work)led some family members to seek employment in South Wales. The background central car-park area by Bishop Street once contained 1-6 Thistle Green. George Groskop a general dealer and shopkeeper, primarily a new and second-hand clothes dealer, previously a hawking jeweller(until c. 1874), fruiterer(1875), and glazier(briefly in 1885) lived at 5 Thistle Green from 1886 to c. 1911 by a plot known as Bulmer”s Yard or Bulmer”s Square, even some of his grandchildren were born at 5 TG. By 1912 a Mrs E. Looney was the new resident clothes dealer at 5 TG. To the extreme left of the photographer(not me) was the previous Groskop family home(1880-1886) at long gone 4 Cross St., which may have doubled as a shop. George”s eldest daughters that survived to adulthood were born here. The walled enclosure behind the left side of the pictured car-park contained Sun Inn Yard in 1894, the home of Emanuel Groskop(clothier then shipyards) and family, George”s second son. The Locomotion No.1 mural is currently painted on an outer wall of this site. The white public house by the car-park, formerly the Three Tuns Inn(now the re-opened Riverside Inn) was a popular venue with boilermakers from the nearby shipyards. Some of George”s sons were prominent members of the local Boilermakers Society. Since George moved at least ten times between 1866 and 1880 many of the neighbouring streets, some just off camera such as Silver St., George St., Brown St., Bishop St., Smithfield(a residence of George”s first son, Henry) and St. Thomas”s Church(in the above photo) are important to this families history. Although George claimed to be a British subject in the 1901 census, his name(or any close derivative) has not been found on the naturalization index at the FRC/London, but a possible relative Emanuel Fryde based in Sunderland has an entry for 10 June 1861. Searching the above names, locations and titles on the PS site will produce better quality photographs.
