There is a good aerial photo of Thornaby Airfield in 1939 on the Picture Stockton web site. It’s in the "Browse" then "Aerial Photos" section. Second page titled RAF Thornaby on Tees. Thornaby Road is visible at the right hand side.
Check out the 1911 Census. They lived on Low Barwick Farm which presumably is the farm in the photo.
My Grandfather lived on this farm. His mother drowned in a pond somewhere behind the Fox Covert pub when walking home one night does anyone know where the pond was or have any information about the Patterson family that lived in the farm?
In the late 70s my friends and I would spend every Sunday walking from Thornaby to Roseberry Topping via Stokesley, back through Great Ayton, Stokesley, Hilton and pass through farmer”s fields (later Ingleby Barwick). We would walk the copuple of miles through the future Ingleby Barwick with our knees well bent and our heads low, as we were told at school that the farmer had a gun and he shoots at you if he finds you on his land! We would make our way through to Bassleton Woods and play on a rope swing well into the dark. Our torches would lead our way out past the Griffin pub in Thornaby and home. Aaaaah, Bisto!
I find your web site very interesting as I am not a local. I would be interested to see past photos of Thornaby Road especially in the area of the Poplars Residential Home onwards. I would like to find some history on my home which is next to the Children’s Nursery. If anyone has any information I would greatly appreciate it. As for all the other photos I congratulate you all for your hard work. It’s a pleasure to go through them all and to see how much this area has progressed over the years. Well done and keep up the good work. Val
