Market Day in Stockton.

Stockton’s open market on our famous High Street has traded here for nearly 700 years. The market takes place on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. There is also a Farmers Market on the fourth Friday in every month. Back in 1935 stallholders were selling umbrellas to the people of Stockton for 2s 6d each and the costs to a trader for renting a stall were 16s 6d, free of rates and taxes. The total receipts for stall rental from a Wednesday market on a sunny day in Stockton back in 1935 were approximately £60. Mr J Buckley who was the market superintendent at the time said, Stockton market is increasing in popularity and with the return of normal times it will most assuredly more popular?. One of the big changes is that an area of the High Street is now for pedestrians only. The views of the market are from the 1900s to the present time.
