  2. I have inherited a gold pen from my late father who was a ship’s doctor on a voyage from UK to New Zealand after the war. It is inscribed J.V.G (his initials) MV Port Huon – MV San Adolfo 3rd February 1948.
I remember hearing a story of him being transferred from his ship to another where a crew member had been struck down by illness or an accident, during a very bad storm in the middle of the Atlantic. I’m wondering if there is any record of the voyages of these two ships, and who their captains were. I’d be grateful for any help in finding the background to this pen.

    • I am building a model of SAN ADOLOFO and have very few references to work with, do you have any photos of your model you would share with me ? I am particularly keen to see more of the deck arrangements, piping manifolds, valves etc and what colours they were painted.
Any help would be most appreciated,
      thank you
      BILL BROGAN.

  3. Here”s a story about my Dad and the San Adolfo.  This was one of Dad”s first deep sea voyages, and his first to Africa. They landed at Apapa, which is across from Lagos. He had to haul the lines to the shore for refuelling. When that watch was done, he was anxious to explore Nigeria, and in particular to have some of the fabled tombo beer. On his way ashore, he was accosted by a local photographer, who insisted on taking his photo with a big square box camera, on a tripod, which had a beer bottle cap over the lens. He remembers having to stay still whilst the man took off and then replaced the beer bottle cap. Later, returning to the ship, full of tombo, the same photographer was at the gangway to sell him this photograph of his portrait.

  4. 164464 San Adolfo. mv 11,335 dwt. Built by Furness Shipbuilding Co Ltd, Haverton Hill-on-Tees. Launched, February 21st 1935. Delivered, May 15th 1935. Requisitioned by the Admiralty November 5th 1939 and employed as a Fleet oiler, under command of Capt H. C. Archer, throughout the last War. While on the Atlantic and West Indies Station in 1940/41 valuable assistance was rendered by the San Adolfo to the Naval authorities in salvaging a captured German tanker raider subsequently renamed Empire Salvage. Later the San Adolfo operated as Fleet oiler in convoys to Russia, invasion of North Africa and the Pacific War (mentioned in Chapter V of the Eagle Fleet, the story of the tankers at war).
