Castlegate.

Looking down Castlegate from the High Street, Stockton. The site of:

  • Stockton Castle until 1652
  • Town houses built 1841 demolished 1904
  • Castle Theatre opened 1908 renamed Empire Theatre. Closed 1961 demolished 1968
  • The Swallow Hotel opened here in 1973

  1. Looking down Castlegate from the High Street (1958) the white building on the right behind the theatre (snooker hall) was G.E.Ferguson and Sons, joiners shop. I started work there in 1958 as an apprentice joiner but sadly left to earn more money, still on the tools though. I can remember Ernie Ferguson, and his son Donald,Tony Wilson, Ray Garbut and Mick Quinn. I know its forty odd years ago but still have happy memories of those times. Anybody remember Rossi”s coffee bar at the top of the street? Give me a call sometime.
