I think this picture was took on Bishopton Road. On the right is St.Bedes and a bit further down is Safeway. In the background you can see one of the high rise flats in the town centre, the other one is masked by the tree. (This information was kindly provided by DM Robinson)Can you help?

  1. I”m inclined to agree with Barry. It looks like the old road between Eston, Ormesby, and Normanby. This would explain the trollybus poles, many of which were left in situ as the were used to support street lighting, which can be observed in the photograph.

  2. HOW ABOUT STATION ROAD AT BILLINGHAM! JUST ROUND THE CORNER IS COTSWOLD CRECSENT AND THE LAY-BYS ARE SPOT ON! JUST AROUND THE CORNER TO THE LEFT WOULD BE THE SIGNAL HOUSE TO STOP ANY TRAFFIC!

  3. Its not the road from the Mitre Pub to the Monkey Tree. This is the old road which went into Eston, to confirm this if you look in the backround, in the distance you can see the all the flue stacks of ICI Wilton. I would travel along this road everyday for 5yrs while serving my apprenticeship. The road was modernised when the Parkway was constructed.

  4. THIS IS STOCKTON, I DON”T KNOW THE NAME OF THE ROAD BUT IT IS THE ROAD FROM THE MITRE PUBLIC HOUSE TO THE MONKEY TREE.

  5. the MG car on the left has a yellow rear numberplate, which would date this to no earlier than 1967, these numberplates were compulsary on all vehicles from 1st Jan 73,the fact that this is an MG of this type suggests the early 70s, the poles could be Trolley Bus poles, notice how they lean out slightly. the Teesside system closed in 1972, and so they could be leftovers from this, making this photograph of somewhere on the Trolley Bus system.

  6. I don”t think this picture belongs on this website. It reminds me of nowhere in Stockton but it does seem as if I know it.The tall structure might not be a tower block but a gasometer at Cleveland ironworks, South Bank and the distant industrial skyline be North Tees refinery. I also can”t remember seeing overhead electricity lines anywhere in the areas suggested by previous correspondents. To my eye it looks like one of the roads between Eston or Normanby and S. Bank or Grangetown

  7. As a former pupil of OLSB who used to walk down Bishopton Road (West) from the Fairfield side this photo does not jog any memories. If the photo depicts St Bede”s on the right where is the hump backed railway bridge just before you got to the school?

  8. I am fairly sure DM Robinson is wrong about this location. I have been employed at Our Lady & St. Bede School (formerly St. Bede”s and St. Mary”s) for more than 30yrs, and in my view the photo scene bears little resemblance to Bishopton Road (West). Is it possible that the scene is part of Norton Rd, nearing Norton?

    • Mr Easby, there’s a blast from the past. Remember the best football team that ever played for OLSB ? Guti, Leighton, Piggott and co. – 4 out of 4 leagues, 4 out of 5 district cups, 2 semi finals in the County Cup (cheated by Nunthorpe in both) and a good run in the FA Youth Schools Cup ? Never to be repeated and never acknowledged by Maloy! Sad but true.

      • I remember that team, best ever. Guti went on to play for Middlesbrough, Piggott played for Sunderland, Hysen for Hartlepool & Leighton should have ended up Pro – top lads. The school didn’t deserve that team, the teachers were too busy pandering to model pupils that played the Violin and sang in the church choir. What a waste!
