Janus Sandefjord. 1949

The Janus Sandefjord with a gross tonnage of 15943 was built at Haverton Hill shipyard by North Eastern Marine it was owned by Anders Jahre. The keel was laid on 3rd December 1948 and the ship was launched on 21st November 1949. The photographs show the ship at sea and entering the harbour. There are also several different views of the interior showing the engine room, chart room, wheelhouse, crew mess room, gangway, captains lounge, crew single cabin, owners day room and the captains day room.

  1. I looked up the Anders Jahre”s Shipping Co. web site and on their guest book site I saw a request for pictures of Janus. I refered him to this site and the chap was absolutely delighted. All Anders Jahre”s ships were named starting with J. Jahre lived in Sandefjord in Southern Norway and registered all his ships there. He was a great benefactor of the town of Sandefjord. As it happens I worked for a year in Sandefjord in 1985 and still visit friends there.

  2. As can be seen from the bow view of the vessel being launched her name was simply JANUS. I suspect Sandefjord may have been her Norwegian port of registration. In 1963 she became the LUCRETIA under the Liberian flag and was broken up in 1973.
