Any ideas? (Photo courtesy of SBC Road Safety Team)
I think that this is the blast furnaces of Warne & Co,Norton Ironworks, at Station Road, Norton. (This information was kindly provided by David McMann)
The Norton Iron-Works of Warner, Lucas & Barratt, Calf Fallow Lane, Norton in the 1860s. They made the bell (Big Ben) for the clock on St Stephens Tower in 1856. In the background , across Billingham Beck Valley, is the hedged Sandy Lane, Billingham. In the foreground can be seen an early coal truck in rake of wagons on coal gantry. The slag-tip of this short enterprise , now grass and bush covered, is still visible. The Forest Park housing estate now stands on the work site, with road names connected with Big-Ben and the Houses of Parliament. (This information was kindly provided by Robert Harbron)
This is Norton Ironworks soon after it was built in c.1855/56. Its part of the same long panoramic photo as the one on the left end two rows down. (This information was kindly provided by Mark Rowland-Jones)
Thank you to Cllr R Cains for pointing out the error on our location map it has now been corrected.
I think this person in front of the Iron Works could be my great grandfather, does anybody have any further info about this photograph or the surnames Percifier/Walker
