My aunt, Gladys Ackling Nee Crow, worked at the coop in Havelock Street Thornaby and was firewatching there. She recalls the bombing that Susan Carwright refers to.
My mum is now 84, she was 14 when the second world war broke out. The Germans tryed to bomb the Cleveland flour mills and missed hitting Victoria Bridge, you can still see the bullet holes to this day. My mum was known as Jean Paterson.. her Grandma was the Caretaker of Cleveland flour mills known as grannie Balentine. Mrs Balentine brought my mum up, they lived in Chappel street, Thornaby which is now TFM radio station.
