  1. My Grandmother Mrs Cameron lived at No 16 next to Mr and Mrs Jones and their daughters Glynis and Eileen. I remember the Clasper and Ellis families lived opposite. She lived their from early 60’s till they were moved out and the demolition started

  2. I remember Mary Street well, I used to play there with my friends all the time, There and Anderson Road. I lived on Cobden Street, num 73 facing Heslop Street. Wish I was still there, best time ever.

  3. Regarding the photo of Mary Street,I am researching Derek Dalrymple who served in the Royal Engineers during WW2 and was killed in Normandy. He was born at 12 Mary Street in 1920 but I don`t know if the family was still there in the 1950`s

    • Sheila, My name is Dalrymple, and although I never lived in Thornaby, my Dad did. He was born and raised there. His father was killed in the war then his mother married a man called Casey Jones. I think my Dad lived in the area around the 5 Lamps, could it be Wilson Street? Anyway if I can be of any help, you can get my email address by contacting Picture Stockton.

      • Hallo Ian, Derek Dalrymple was a pal of my brother-in-law Arthur Bitten
They served with the Royal Engineers in Normandy. Derek was killed whilst
dismantling a German shell. I understand that he never married.

Sorry I have taken so long to answer your comment.

    • My mother, June Triffitt Una Dalrymple (married Whitehouse) was youngest sister of Derek. There were other siblings: James (also killed ww2) Basil and Fred. Fred had a twin brother, but stillborn)
      Sisters were:
      Betty, Catherine, Joyce.
Their parents were David Isaac and Emma (Gilmoure pre-marriage)

David Isaac is buried in Utley cemetery, Keighley, West Yorks. My mother is buried at Carlton cemetery, Skipton, W. Yorks.

    • I didn’t realise it is now 11 yrs since my first post on Picture Stockton. A bit more info. after visiting 96 yr old Mrs Winifred E.Clasper this weekend in Thornaby. She is well and still remembers lots about the area, She reminded me that Mr and Mrs Taggart lived at #14. John Harland from #10 is now living in Australia, Paul Clasper is in contact and lives in Hertfordshire,
I had a drive around the local area that I knew so well. Everything looks smaller than I remembered. Gone are the Fish and Chip and Corner shops in Teesdale Terrace along with the Co-op in Cobden St, Shops in Mansfield Ave ,Langley Ave have disappeared. Heslop St is blocked off as are others. Thomas Rea’s building is gone along with Westbury Street School and all the two up two down terraced houses in the streets that we once knew so well.
All these are now just memories that us oldies remember.
