Can you spot the old main offices of ICI? As part of the War defence the main headquarter buildings were painted in camouflage. Quite a task, don’t you think?
Our front door was opposite the monument which now stands in Station Road I think. The HQ of ICI called Organic House was draped in ivy when I was a child… i.e our garden is in the picture also… took some looking after… it was very big both sides.
I do believe the building was called Organic House, can’t remember our garden being that tidy. Jan, you must have lived near the Jones family, Griers next door I think, remember them. Good site this.
Definitely Chilton House… didn’t it also used to be known as Organic House at one time? Where your house was, Mr Tucker, was a carpark when I lived on Roscoe Road, number 16. That was 1966-1979.
Definitely Chilton House, I should know because we lived opposite! 2 Roscoe Road, confusing because we were half in Chilton Ave, thats our garden with the post box in the corner which I believe is a car park now.
I spent many hours in Chilton House when Engineering Department was based there. The staircase was truly magnificent, as was the table in the board room. I did hear that it was sawn into pieces so that it could be removed, talk about modern day vandalism. When the extension was built the floor levels were not the same as the old building, so the was a small downward ramp on the ground floor and an upward ramp on the top floor.
This is Chilton House, in Chilton Avenue, nr I.C.I offices. This is Chilton House, in Chilton Lane I.C.I west-Gate opened by the Prince of Wales (Edward VII) in the early i930s. All the cooling-towers were also painted with an arc of black on the surrounding ground to prevent them showing up in flare or Moon-light shadow. The War-Memorial or Cenotaph which stood outside Chilton House is now in a floral beautiful Memorial Garden in Station road , nr Billingham-Motors roundabout .
