Working in the Process Offices, the office window looked out onto the gas holder beside the canteen. A new member of staff once asked why the holder was much lower in the afternoon than in the morning, she believed us when we told her it was where the canteen stored the soup for the lunches.
I was also there when the Ammonia Plant exploded in the late 60’s, it didn’t do a lot for our office windows.
This is a holder in the Stockton Gas Works, Thompson Street, with the large coal-coking building. On the otherside of this building was the path that led to the rail footbridge to Newtown
The gas holder was opposite the T1 plant of Ammonia Works but I don”t think it had any connection to the Ammonia Works. To the right of the gas holder, off photo, was the central works canteen.

I am not 100% certain on this one, but I can”t recall a gas holder on the ammonia works at Billingham. Looks more like a gas works, Stockton?
