On closer inspection this photo was taken from opposite our house on Princess Avenue. If you followed the path up past the lamp post you would arrive at the Lord Nelson pub. You can just about see the posts for the washing lines which we used to use as goalposts when playing football, many a time we used to accidentally smash one of the downstairs maisonette windows with our ball then scatter to the winds through the alleys situated in the middle of the blocks !
I too lived on princess avenue for many years, no.56 on the corner adjacent to the YMCA and opposite the old peoples home. Garby Street Estate it was known as then, great days, remember the likes of Peter & Paul Mulgrew,Ian & Steve Carson, Kevin & Paddy McGovern, Robert Richardson, Brian Wake, Tommy Morley, our kid Budgie Martin, Oshor & Peter Williams used to come up from tilery, the innocence of youth….
this is a picture of “garby estate” as everyone who lived there called it. I lived there for six years on princess avenue just next to where this photo was taken.
It is called Victoria Estate, but I grew up on Tilery Estate and we always refered to it as “Garby”. I hope that was not just a nickname my family used.
I posted a comment regarding Tilery Housing Estate correcting its name. We locals know it as Maritime but I do believe it comes under the name Victoria Estate
This picture is not of Tilery Housing Estate, but of the nearby Estate called Maritime, as it is known to the locals. Maritime is situated behind Stockton swimming baths (Splash). Tilery Housing Estate is off of Norton Road.

This photo is not Tilery, I used to live in Howard Street, through the sixties.
Garby is short for Garbutt Street. Turn right at the Buffs club on Norton Road, that is Garbutt Street which leads onto Victoria Estate.
