I used to love The Royal/Charlies at the end of my fri/Sat nights out. I had my YTS money, beer was 75p a pint, and I’d be coming back from the Berni Inn. I used to love his home made beef curries….
I wonder what Charlie”s (chippy owner)real name is? It definately isn”t Charlie as he”s an Asian bloke.I have known the man 30 years and never even once thought to ask his real name !
This was my great grandfathers house in the 1900″s. His wife gave birth to 18 children and 16 lived onto adulthood. Fourteen were female and only four male,no wonder he only lived until he was 62 years old. His wife died aged 89yrs old.
This used to be the Royal Fish Shop back in the fifties and sixties. They sold the best fish and chips (with scraps) I”ve ever had anywhere. On weekends it would fill up at 10.30pm when the Bowesfield pub closed and the revellers would come in for their suppers. The couple who owned it were members of the Salvation Army.

Charlies real name is Shoukat Rashid, Ken. He’s a very nice and polite person.

My father was born at 30 Bowesfield Lane in 1929. Can anyone please tell me if the building still stands? My mum tells me he was born above a shop.

I remember being stunned one day in this chippy because chips had gone up to 11 pence a bag !
At the time the photograph was taken, the illuminated sign above the door still said “The Royal” allthough it was more usually known as Charlie”s.
