Mary Ann Teasdale. c1915

Very little is known about this lady except that she was from Tilery in Stockton. She appeared as a Belgian mother in the 1914 American film the Melting Pot. She left Britain with her two children, but her husband never left Stockton to join his family.

  1. On a family search came up related to Teasdale my mothers name Dora Gartland her mother Annie her father Thomas Gartland maybe a connection here.

    • Hello June. My grandmother Jane Anne Gartland had a brother Thomas who went to Canada in the early 1900’s. He married there but returned alone to London and married again. In Canada he stayed with his uncle Robert Teasdale, father of the Mary Jane in the photo.

      • Hello Carole, just saw tour reply Thomas was my grandfather I KNOW WERE RELATION TO Teasdales been doing family tree.

  2. This lady was my great grandmother”s niece and her name is Mary Jane teasdale, not Mary Ann. Her father was Robert Teasdale and her mother Rosa Hilyer. She had a brother Robert and two sisters Maude and Violet and later, in Canada, a brother Alan. I and other ancestors have been trying for years to trace any living family in canada but have hit a brick wall. We know she died in california in 1969 and her daughter Cora Clarke of Toronto registered her death. Her father”s brother George (or John George) lived in Craistor St tilery in 1912. Her mother”s family (Hilyers) had a grocer”s shop in Tilery Road at the turn of the century. Family names connected to her are Plant, Gartland, Stainton, Garbutt.I have two more stunning photos of her taken in 1915 in New York and passed to me by a relative of her two daughters who is desperate to make contact with the family of the daughters.

    • Hello Carole, name Hiyer came up on my tree shop you were talking about Tilery Road was it on the corner? I’m sure her name was Lil tallish woman can’t remember her husband’s name. If its them they use to deliver groceries to Mums house on Hardwick when we moved from Tilery. Would love to know more.

    • I would be very interested in seeing these photographs as I am trying to research her for a local history group. As your comments are 2004, Carole, you may not be looking at this any time soon, so if anyone else has information please reply asap.
