I am researching my family tree and John Settle, the coroner mentioned by Rachel Bowman, was my Great, great, great Grandfather. He was married to Georgiana (nee Robinson)and lived at 73 and then 77 Brunswick Street, Stockton with 11 children. I am also looking for information on his grand daughter, Laura Adams, who had two boys at the age of 17 (Percival) & 19 (Courtney) without a father being mentioned on the birth certificates. She married a Richard Jones at the age of 20 who seems to have adopted them but they kept the name of Adams. Percival was born in 1895 at 31 Adderley Street, Stockton. Was this a maternity hospital?
Hey sue, I know this is a very late reply I wasn’t born when you wrote this, but John Settle is my 5th great grandfather and I’m sure we have some ancestors with the last name “Hill”, if you need help finding anyone or could help us could you please get back to me. Thank you.
To Lancelot Howard Barron sorry I can not give you any information on the Ashmore family. However you my be able to help me.I was intrigued with your name my fathers name is Robert William Barron and he was born in 1922. My daughter Barbara is researching our family tree and has discovered that one of my dads grandfathers brothers was called Lancelot Barron and he was born in 1864.Also my dads great grandfather had a brother called Lancelot and he was born in 1827.Do you know of any conection with you and your family with my dads family. I would not think that there are many Lancelot Barrons in the Stockton-on-Tees area.
As my father”s uncle was William Ashmore I am very interested in anything that anyone finds out about the company. I should have asked my father but of course in those days I was not interested in family history. I”d like to know when the last Ashmore worked for the company.
I am trying to research an industrial accident that happened at the Bowesfield Ironworks in August 1888. My partner”s great-grandfather was killed in the accident and there was a coroners inquest held on 20 August 1888; the worker was called Michael Ruth, described as a “Holder up at Ironworks” and the coroner was John Settle. If you have any info I”d be grateful for it. Please send to Rachelabowman@aol.com. Many thanks
David – I thought you might be interested in the following extract taken from the original circular announcing the formation of Ashmore Benson Pease & Company Ltd in 1885. “The works are favourable situated for obtaining the very best qualities of steel and iron plates and materials for Gasholder work, roof and bridge building ,& c, and give ample facilities for construction at these works, a gasholder which will be the largest in the world, consisting of four lifts, two hundred and seventy-five feet high. This huge structure is for the South Metropolitan Gas Company, and is similar to the large holder recently erected by Ashmore & While for the same company”. Good luck wth your research.
Gentlemen, I am a mechanical engineer working for Aker Kvaerner Engineering Services who now as you may know work at Ashmore House in Stockton. I am currently puttng together as many pictures/facts/memories of the Ashmore House Site as we will be leaving the building next year and wish to record as much history of the site as possible into a history booklet. I am extremely interested in any history on William Ashmore himself and any facts such as those stated previously would be v.useful for the history booklet I am trying to create. I hope you can help?
Brian could this be a bit of info to add to the research on William Ashmore From the 1901 census the following:- William Ashmore is recorded age 72, Born West Bromwich Staffs, administrative county Durham, Civil Parish Eaglescliffe, Occupation Gas Plant Manufacturer, From the http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl there was a death recorded in the December quarter of 1904 of a William Ashmore aged 75 recorded in the Stockton district, in register volume 10a page 53, which tallies approx with the age in the census and the date of birth
In 1890 William Ashmore bought a house in Hartburn called Landieu and lived there for five years. In 1895 William Ashmore sold Landieu to Matthias Robinson, founder of one of Stockton”s best known department stores, “M Robinson & Son”. I have researched several of the large, Victorian built, properties in Hartburn and the families who lived in them. I never discovered very much information about William Ashmore other than that he was born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire in 1830. As Lancelot says Mr Ashmore founded “Ashmore & While”, Hope Iron Works, Bowesfield Lane, Stockton in 1873 for the manufacture of gasholders, boilers and bridges. In 1885 R S Benson & E L Pease came into the business and the limited company “Ashmore Benson Pease & Co. Ltd.” was founded. The Power Gas Corporation aquired the company in 1901. As far as I understand William Ashmore died at his home in Yarm but what year I don”t know.
I am the great grand-nephew of William Ashmore who founded Ashmore, While & Co, 1873, Samuel While was his Brother in Law. It later became Ashmore Benson & Pease.

Does anyone know if the largest gasholder in the world, built by Ashmore Benson and Pease exists to this day? Many have survived through time.
Stuart, contact me for details of the Haystack Boiler which my group, LIHS excavated from Swannington Site.
