Season 1938-39 was Stocktons last as amateurs in Northern League after fifty years continuous membership,the following season they turned professional & joined the North Eastern League,their first home game in this league was in front of 4,863 spectators in a 2-2 draw with Ashington.
My aunt has a copy of this picture signed by all of the players featured. The goalkeeper is N. Purdy. My maternal grandfather Harry Covell is on the left of the back row. Harry Hughes Covell was born on 12 October 1912 and died on 11 November 1995. The signatures from left to right back row are: H. Covell, J. Wanless, N. Purdy, J. Batty, K. Kidd, P.R. Todd. I can tell you that the Goal Keeper in this image is my grandfather Norman Purdy. He is now 92 years old.
