Richard Hind School. 1950

This photo was taken in 1950 when Richard Hind School won the prestigious Richard Gaunt Trophy. The trophy was contested by schools representing all towns on Teesside. The photo shows L-R: Motty Rea who ran the 220 yards 3rd Leg, Flappy Ross who ran the 440 yards 4th Leg, Myself who ran the 110 yards 1st Leg and Don Pickering who ran the 110 yard 2nd Leg. I can assure you that Don did not run in these ridiculous shorts and where he obtained them from for this photo taken at Thirwells Studios in Stockton remains a mystery. The relay race was unusual in that each leg was run by boys of different age groups. I was not quite 12, Don was 13, Motty was 14 and Flappy 15. The race was run at a professional athletics meeting held at Stockton`s Victoria Football Ground. The race brought the house down and we became the first Stockton School to win the Trophy. We failed to retain the Trophy the following year when we were disqualified for an illegal baton-change. The eventual winners being the Hugh Bell School from Middlesbrough. I still have the tiny shield awarded for our performance. Photograph and text courtesy of Mr Ged Hutchinson.

  1. Right first time Ged Hutchinson. It certainly was Peter Henry. Remarkable that I checked on this forum almost a year after I had written about Richard Hind winning at Feethams!
There was plenty of athletics talent about on Teesside but at that time not the facilities that could attract young people to take up athletics as a regular hobby. To do well you moved away as did Peter Higgins who ran internationally in the 440 yards. I believe his club was Southgate Harriers but I could be wrong.

  2. I somehow missed Ken Sayer`s comment and I am really taxing my memory to come up with an answer. More an educated guess than anything but I would say the runner cheered on by MacDonald Bailey was Peter Henry. Am I correct? My memory also played tricks when I supplied the caption for the photograph. The Richard Gaunt Trophy was the Trophy presented to the winning Stockton Senior Boys School in the annual senior schools athletics competition. I now believe that the trophy that we won in 1950 at the Victoria Ground was the William Jackson Trophy. Ken Sawyer may be able to confirm this. Incidentally, Richard Hind did indeed win the Richard Gaunt Trophy in 1950 but that was not associated with this photo.

  3. I recall this well and being stood alongside Arthur Fenny then i/c PE and he had his gentle but highly satisfied smile as the RHS team triumphed. Keith Rhea ran for Durham Schools in the ESAA championships at Southampton in 1951, I think.
Richard Hind teams competed at similar major athletics meetings at Feethams, Darlington and Acklam Park, Middlesbrough.
A medley relay, as this one was, but all one age group was won at Feethams with RHS’s last leg runner being cheered on by the famous MacDonald Bailey.
Now for the memory test! Given that clue, who ran that last leg?

  4. I wonder Ged, when you mention that Hugh Bell School won the trophy the following year, if John Andrew would have been in that team? He came to RH in the 3rd year from Hugh Bell and would have qualified for their team.

  5. Further to comments by Benny Brown and Bob Irwin, this photo shows both Motty Rea and Flappy Ross. The photo was taken in 1950
