  1. I well remember the power failure which occurred on a Friday as a result of a double fault at the site power station. It resulted in first a drop in the frequency of the then main supply which was at 40 Hz. The 50 Hz supply from the grid was not affected which meant that the then new main and site offices remained lit and in use as did the the only 50 Hz machines then opn site. At the time I was the Drikold plant engineer and to my horror no s. 5 and 6 CO2 compressors, the 50 hz machines, continued pumping CO2 to 3 & 4 Urea plants in total darkness until they coud be shut down. I do not remember that ammonia production was lost for more than a few days. Shortly after that I was transferred to the new Pressure Steam Reforming plants at Billingham ( and on loan to the Heysham plants ). Once these were commissioned after trouble with the air compressors was resolved the coke ovens, hydrogen plant and T1 compression plant became redundant.

  2. I was an apprentice at Billingham ICI, 1957 to 1962 & I remember that Billingham ICI had its own coke ovens, I recall that in the late 50s the site suffered a massive & prolonged power outage. I believe that the coke ovens could not be emptied during that outage & the heat of the process destroyed the entire coke oven plant. The photo could well be of that event.
