  1. Was the home being mentioned at 56 Hartington road? I’m just doing some research for someone and their grandfather is potentially there in 1911.

  2. I went to Oxbridge school around 1950 and remember the boys from the home being walked to school all dressed the same. I was only 10 but I still think about the boys every time I pass

  3. Re Albert Hill. I have original letters from him if anyone is interested. Dr. Bill Davies.

  4. There is mention of ghosts on Hartington Road. Whilst we were living there our daughter was bombarded with visits and taunts from ghosts in her room. Anyone have any similar problems with no. 20?

  5. I can vouch for Ged Hutchinson’s comment. The end of Hartington Road stood between the High Street and Oxbridge where we lived. My mother once even made a diversion past the door of the children’s home and threatened to leave me on the door step and run away!! My behaviour improved immediately.

  6. I was at the childrens home in 1966 when i was 9. I remember there were a succession of homes and all the girls wore a kind of uniform that denoted which home they came from. Horrible grey checked dress with coloured elastic cuffs and waist. I hated it and they were very cruel. I remember a girl with what I would now know as learning disabled being force fed. I can’t remember which school we went to, I only that I wasn’t going to have anyone think Iwas stupid because I came from a home.

  7. We have now added the photograph mentioned by William Davies to this page which shows Mr Hill and his sisters.

  8. William, I would be very keen to see the photograph that you have of Mr Hill and his sisters as I am the grandaughter of their brother Bertram C Hill who also lived at the same address.

  9. I have a beautiful photograph of Mr Hill and his sisters of 7 Hartington Rd, Stockton. This was taken about 1950 – anyone interested? My sister Amy was their maid.

  10. Can anyone tell me about No 4 Home Hartington Road Stockton on Tees. I have found a baptism in 1915 for a relative who was living there at time of his baptism with his parents. I have been told that it was a childrens home, but confused because why be a home for children if he was still with his family, unless his parents were running the home. Regards Louise

  11. A big correction here and an apology. I was not inferring that the Homes kids were dumb!!!! I was the dumb one. Mr. Albert Hill of 7 Hartington Rd. became my role model for future years. I spent many afternoons with my sister Amy in his house. He took great delight in showing me all his drawing instruments. In my younger days in Canada I actually taught engineering drawing.

  12. For Beryl Clare: Yes Amy was my dear sister, now departed, and worked many years until they all died. My mother also worked for Albert. She was Cissie Davies. Thank you so much for this lovely memory of 7 Hartington Rd.

  13. BERYL CLARE DID YOU LIVE IN DOUGLAS ST? IF SO YOUR MAM MARY WAS A VERY GOOD FRIEND OF MY MOTHER .MY TWO STEP BROTHERS CHARLIE AN KIETH AARON WOULD BE IN YOUR AGE GROUP. MOTHERS NAME WAS EDNA WE LIVED IN NO 15 DOUGLAS ST

  14. For Dr. Bill Davies. I was interested to read that your sister worked for Mr Hill in Hartington Road. Mother always said he was a “real gentleman”. Is/was your sisters name Amy, my Mother worked for Mr Hill and his sisters and she made friends with a lady there who was named Amy. They remained friends for many years. My late Mother”s name was Mary Goldsbrough.

  15. I remember no.7 hartington rd. Very well. A Mr. Albert E. Hill lived there. He was a retired ship”s chief engineer. my sister was his maid!! She worked there until he died. He had two sister s living with him. I I used to go there to get a bath!!! It was a gracious home . He encouraged me as a little kid to go into engineering. The house was eventually sold and made into a number of flats. How sad!!!!! I remember the Home”s kids. They went to Mill Lane Schools. At that time, I was also one of the really dumb kids!!!!!!! A total failure. BUT, things changed!!!!!

  16. I can identify with Ged Hutchinson and the Hartington Rd homes for boy”s. The times my mother threatened to make me a “Homesy Lad” frightened me to death. Grey uniform and black hob nailed boots. No way!! I toed the line every time.

  17. Hartington Road revives unwelcome memories of my childhood. When I was young, a children`s home ran by nuns was located in Hartington Road. On days when my behaviour drove my mother to despair she would threaten me with Hartington Road in the hope that my behaviour would improve. It invariably did.
