Drikold, “dry ice”, or frozen carbon dioxide was produced at the Drikold Plant at I C I and I remember for years seeing a fast freight train – pass Norton Junction at about 16.50, each weekday evening, made up of these containers. I believe it was bound for the Birmingham area. The product was used by firms such as Eldorado Ice Cream for keeping their goods frozen while in transit.
The time I worked on the east grid most of the drikold went to Blackpool other containers went to other destinations never a full train to Birmingham
