Photos from the Past

Norton Mill c1913. A watermill at Norton was recorded in 1183, although the mill in this picture was built in the 18th Century. Despite industrialisation in Stockton in the 19th Century there was still a large agricultural workforce and there had been at least 30 corn mills in the area.

  1. This is the best Photograph I have seen to show exactly where the bomb dropped that wrecked the Mill. The water way is the old canal built in Roman times from the Tees to the Mills at Wolverston and further up the valley. It must have been altered as the brickwork closed that end off and into the wheel sluice plus a run off under the small bridge. If the bomb had hit the water or the soft ground instead of the brickwork the damage would have been much less (my Fathers assesment as we stood looking at the damage) I was a bit young to come to conclusions at the time standing there amazed at what damage could be caused. Those bombs had given me the fright of my life as being a bit tardy getting out of my bed they caught me on the road in the open on my way to number 8 Mill lane shelter to be with Mrs Pearson and her children, her husband was working away so Mother insisted we kept them company. After that fright I was in the shelter the second the sirens went, well for a while.
