This view of the High Street end of Dovecot Street was taken around 1865. The building on the right was opened in 1840 as the Corporation Hall. It was purchased to become the Mechanics Institute in 1851,offering a reading room, library and adult evening classes in the three “R”s”. The gabled Alma Hotel next door was then one of the oldest of Stockton”s buidings. Further up the street where the Spread Eagle pub stood is where the entrance to the Wellington Square mall now stands.
On closer examination it seems that a house once occupied the spot where the Hippodrome stood. Can anyone offer any info on that?
