  1. Does anyone have pictures of the factory from after it closed down? I lived in Swinburn Road between 1998-2008 and used to explore the old factory and get up to no good as a kid.

  2. DOES ANYONE KNOW ANY INFORMATION ABOUT A MAN FALLING OF THE ROOF AT THIS FACTORY IN OCTOBER 1992 ? I HAVE GOOGLED IT AND CANT FIND ANY INFO.
HE WAS MY DAD AND AND I WAS ONLY 2 SO I DON’T NO ANYTHING ABOUT HIM OR HIm DYING.
PLEASE COULD SOMEONE GET BACK TO ME.

  3. Thre relevance to Norton is that Mr Damm, an ex-German POW, from Kiora Camp, worked and later took over Norton blacksmiths forge on The Green. Moving to the premises on photo, they turned out wrought iron work, gates, fencing stands etc, which could be seen in the workshop yard when passing. One of this type of work is the shelving sections in ‘Blackwells the Butcher’ on Norton Green.

  4. The white building next door to Hill’s as mentioned was originally a Blacksmiths Shop named Damm & Harker which eventually became Flanges Ltd and this company moved to Portrack in the mid 60’s. The companies Swan’s & Everfield motors were latter owners of these premises.

  5. Dave, the Fred Carter you knew who finished working in Fac.6 as a Foreman in the early 80’s and had a brother working there in Fac.5 would not be the same Fred Carter talked about here. He left Head Wrightsons in 1959 and started at Hills straight after working in the Toilet Cubicle Dept. I started at Hills in 1973 and he retired a long time before that.

  6. Christine. I believe that I knew your father in law. Before going to Hills did he work at Head Wrightsons and before that he worked for his father who had his own business. I believe he lived in the houses after the roundabout on the l.side of the road towards Fairfield coming from Oxbridge.

  7. The white building in the photo is a garage called Everfield Motors which I worked as a mechanic for 25 years it closed down in 2002 for redevelopment. I was told it was a plant hire firm called Swan”s before us and a blacksmiths before them.

  8. My father in-law worked at Hill”s on Norton Road when he came home he used to smell of all the wood shavings his name was Frederick Carter. He was a wood cutting machinist
