I wholeheartedly agree – it grieves me immensely that so many places which are part of our history and heritage have been wantonly destroyed, forever – in the name of so called progress! It makes my blood boil! I can just remember the High street as it was before they built the castle centre as I was only a child then – but several members of my family were merchants who had shops and businesses on the High street around the turn of the century and I”d love it if I could actually see these buildings and not just photos.
Can only agree with John Robson that in the 70″s we made major errors of judgement in destroying what was our heritage – the buildings that formed the heart of Stockton.
This photograph once again brings back wonderful memories of part of Stockton High Street that was so loved by the residents of the town, myself included. How was it ever allowed to be destroyed, to be left with what it is today.
