  1. I lived at the other end of Dovecot Street near the tunnel, in Tarring Sreet, so this picture shows where we walked nearly every day. The lovely Market Town I grew up in and have lived in for 68 years has gone forever. It makes me feel very sad indeed.

  4. On the opposite corner was another basement barber, under Burtons the tailor. The barbers was named “gunners” where we us to go for a “DA”cut in the early fifty,s

  5. Jim McCurley: Your old grammar school pal Luke Casey is a presenter with Tyne-Tees Television, presenting mainly rural shows, walking around the lanes and villages of Durham, Norhtumberland and North Yorks.,interveiwing the locals. His daughter Siobhan is also with Tyne-Tees.

  6. The basement of the Northern Echo building was occupied by a gentlemen”s hairdressers in the 1950s-1970s until the building was demolished. You accessed the hairdressers from a flight of external stairs. The photo shows a light coloured pole with a globe on top at the entrance to the stairs. I suspect that this pole was striped red and white as the traditional barbers pole.

  7. The Northern Echo is where my old grammar school pal Luke Casey began his career as a junior reporter, starting there directly from Saint Mary”s College in Middlesbrough. He later moved to TV journalism. Luke was originally from Ireland and came to Stockton as a boy. He married a Norton girl called Mavis Lightowler. Their son Daniel is an actor who played the sergeant on The Midsomer Murders on TV.
