I wonder what they plan to do with this farm if they don’t want to sell it? My friend rented it out in the late 1990s and kept horses there which I loaned. It’s such a shame this house has gone to ruin!
From what I have read about the farm, it looks like the co-op own the site. It needs to be sold on or done back up its a nice piece of history as you enter Stockton and the longer its left as it is now its just going to get ruined beyond repair… something needs to be done, don’t let this house fall to the ground.
I remember visiting Summerville Farm many times in the 80’s when you lived there Gervaise, with your mum Margaret! It’s so sad to see the state it is now in!
This is Summerville farm.I grew up there from 1978 till about 1996 It was sublet from the co op by the Allens and we rented the house from them.It looks pretty much as it did then.
This picture certainly looks like the Supply dept. of I.C.I. where I worked in the mid-fifties. There were some Huts behind the house which served as Depts.A.C. * E. I.C.I. Sommerville and further up the road was depts.B.D&F. I.C.I Hardwick. Please somebody tell me I”m not hallucinating??????
Harvesting time at Summerville Farm. I remember this farm not by living there, or having a relative or friend living there, but by going there. In the early to mid 50’s one of my earliest memories was going up there not the farm house but the fields opposite where McDonalds and Tesco are now with my mam and siblings to take my dad his dinner as he was working on the harvest during his annual holidays from his work place at Marks and Spencer. Happy days.
I remember this farm. On one of our treks to Thorpe Thewles, the group I was with watched the birth of a group of piglets. We then went on to Thorpe Thewles and looked for fresh water oysters and black pearls in the local stream. TO Sheila, Leslie Plummer is my brother an I lived at 155 Piperknowle Road. Regards Alan Plummer
I remember this farm very well. I went to school with the daughter of the people who were living in the first house. The name of the girl was Penny and she was adopted from China or Hong Kong. I remember her mother being from the south. This would of been around 1970. I spent many happy days at this farm and believed it was haunted, or so we were told. I also used to pick potatoes from the field but this was not paid work and I remember getting caught off the farmer with a couple of others. I never did see my mams shopping trolley again !!!!
Yes this is Summerville Farm looking from Harrowgate Lane with your back to Easington Road in Hardwick. I picked potatoes from the field in the picture when I was 15
I would agree that this is Summerville Farm, my mam lived in the flats opposite the Horse and Jockey. My sister occasionally used to visit the farm to feed the animals.
Farm Buildings Could this be Summerville Farm at the Two Mile-HouseDurham road, just past the present “Horse and Jockey” roundabout ? The styling of both farm and out-buildings (some now gone ) are still present, though not in such a bleak setting. Till the 1960s the land surrounding and farm was the proerty of Stockton Co-op
I was interested in buying this and renovating, I spoke to the Co-op and they do own summerville farm but they wont sell, such a shame!
