  1. Although I lived in Billingham I always enjoyed going to the market on saturdays as a kid with my mother ,and then in my teens and early twenties mostly for the fish market. I was also disappointed the last time (2008) I visited. I’ve been living in northern Germany since 1989 – yes it has lost some of its charm (and yes we are getting old )

  2. I believe the lady in the foreground(wearing white blouse)is Mrs.Elsie Johnson who used to be my boss at the Moderne Bingo club in Norton

  3. i believe the woman in yellow is my mother doreen jordison, i would say this picture dates from the late 70″s

  4. I was quite suprised to see this postcard of Stockton High Street as it used to be. I have had this same card many years, I found it so interesting, so I decided to paint it . The painting is 2/3rd finished , and I have enjoyed painting it as I loved the Market layout at that time. The date I am unsure about, I guess about 1970?.

  5. I loved the old market and used to spend many hours on Saturdays browsing through all the stalls with my best friend at the time, Judith Thompson. Then I actually worked on Matthewsons Fruit and Veg stall on Saturdays for a couple of years when I was about 14 or 15 I.E. 1975 1976. I live in Adelaide, South Australia now and have done since 1982. When I came back for a holiday recently I couldn”t believe how small the market was compared to the old days, it seemed to be less than half the size I remembered. Many spots were vacant, begging the question is the rent too high? I also thought it has lost some of its charm- maybe it”s just me getting old!

  6. I believe that the lady carrying the shopping on the left hand side is my mam”s (Helen Thompson nee Sanders) sister, Alice Rodneigh.

  7. I believe that the lady on the road scene in pink dress is my mother, mrs Edith Farrow, she was living in Portrack at the time
