Hodgson & Downes were a north-eastern firm with a branch in Middlesbrough too. In the 1950’s my father took out an agency to operate a Christmas Club amongst our neighbours, whereby they ordered and paid for their festive-cheer across the year. I can always recall the days near Dec 24th when the H&D van delivered their orders to our home in bulk, ready for collection. The exotic names on the bottle-labels, such as ‘Lemon Hart Rum’ and ‘Johnny Pine’, always fascinated me!
To the right of this picture is Hodgson & Downs Wines, some where in an old book I have, they had an advert for Whisky at 2/6d PER GALLON (12.1/2p in today’s silly money) I will look for this book when time permits.
