  1. The 14m diameter blast furnace for Redcar was constructed by Davy-Ashmore of Bowesfield Lane for the British Steel Corporation (BSC) and ‘Blown-in’ in October 1979 after 6 years of design, manufacture and procurement. This blast furnace was originally designed to produce 10,000 tonnes of iron per day, but rarely if ever fulfilled that target. A second, almost identical, 14m diameter blast furnace was planned and manufactured initially to be built at Redcar, only to be redirected to Port Talbot. The twin was never constructed but was designed, manufactured and procured with the steel shell, refractory linings, pipework and other procured items left to rot on the then BSC site at Redcar, at enormous cost to the tax payer.

  2. This is a good view of one of the UKs biggest blast furnaces. I think the production was 10000 tons of iron a day. It replaced the three blast furances at Clay Lane, near Grangetown, whose output was 6000 tons in total.
