This is a photograph of my Paternal Grandfather, George Wealleans, taken in Woolwich in 1916 during the first few months of his WW1 service. He was conscripted at the ripe old age of 38 and, because of his age and experience, was placed in the RAVC. Prior to the onset of war he started off his working life as a farmworker in Egglescliffe living in a tied cottage in the village. At the end of the war he came home( fortunately) and my Father, who was fifteen at the time, asked his Father, my Grandad to tell him all about the war. His Father refused to tell him anything saying that it wasnt for the ears of someone so young.Later on he was to be a head gardener at Ropner Park living in the family home in Hampton Road. I SERVED IN THE VETERINARY CORP IN 1956/1956, AND THE UNIFORM WAS STILL THE SAME,BREECHES PUTTEES HACKING TYPE JACKET. MATERIAL WAS AS ROUGH AS THE PROVERBIAL BADGERS REAR-END. AFTER FORTY YEARS YOU WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THINGS HAD IMPROVED. BUT ANIMAL WELFARE WAS THE PRIORITY. Along time since original article was posted sorry just found it on web site
