  1. i lived in bransdale close. from 1958-1990 i also remember percy i also remember a penny a ride . and having a good bonfire down the dean.

  2. So many memories! thank to all involved. I lived in Commondale Avenue from 1961-69 and remember Percy with his false leg shouting “any fish” also Billy Bell the mobile shop and the Rington”s tea van. We also played out all day in the streets, but a favorite haunt was the cemetery where we slid down “the dumps” for hours on end.

  3. This photograph taken in 1983 shows not just the typical “modern terrace” of housing and the semi-detached type but also the types of cars around at the time. I lived in Glaisdale Avenue from 1949/50 to 1971 and spent my childhood around the local streets, wandering day or night quite safely. The first few houses on the Newham Grange Estate were built by “direct labour” by Stockton Corporation. After that I believe Fordy and Sons were involved and maybe other major builders of the time. I well remember the Sparks Bakery van coming round with a “walk-in” section to sell cakes and buns, then there was Percy the one legged fish seller, shouting “FISH” at the top of his voice and driving a three wheeler van with his false leg hanging out the driver”s door – those were the days. I would like to see photos of this area in the 1950″s as we have very few due to not having the money for cameras in those days.
