  1. Tom Fanny Lakey was my Grand Father, the Lakeys were a well known sporting family living in Tilery. I do not Know of any connection with the Lakey Cup Stephen Williams was researching. Toms youngest son Robert Rocka Lakey was also a well known footballer who was severely injured aged 18 years of age when on the brink of signing for Barnsley who were one of the top teams in that period. Toms Grandsons Keith Lakey and myself also played for Stockton AFC, so the Lakeys and all that history is now forgotten due to the club disbanding and turning the old Victoria Ground into a new housing development.

    • Hello benny,

  2. Just returned from a narrow-boat holiday on the llangollen canal where in Ellesmere I purchased an epns trophy cup with lid engraved with the inscription ” The Lakey Cup.” It stands approx 33 cm high and is in the shape of an urn with lid. Can anybody give me any information? Stephen Williams

  3. Hi Tony, Re: Bob Chatt, just seen your post, have told my friend Joan that you would like to contact her. She does not have an email address, but if you let me know your email address then I could contact you again and perhaps you would give me a telephone nos. We live in the Lancaster/Morecambe Area

  4. FAO Tony Dodd, I am a football historian and I have been researching the winners of the English League from 1888-89. I was interested to hear that Tony has Bob Chatt”s 1893-94 League Championship Medal as awarded by Aston Villa FC. I also know that Bob also won a second League Medal in 1895-96 but Aston Villa”s records are unclear as to whether Bob received a third medal in 1896-97. Would Tony know whether Bob Chatt received a medal for that season ? The 1896-97 medal was a “Double” medal that had both the League and F.A.Cup trophies on one side. Would love to know via email or phone – 0191 2610322 and I will return your call. Yours sincerely, IAN ROSS

  5. I”d be interested to be in touch with the friend of Josie Briggs, whose Great Grandfather was Robert (Bob) Chatt. Bob Chatt was my Great Uncle. My Grandmother was his younger sister. I have his FA League winners medal from 1894.

    • What was your grandmother’s name? My great grandfather was the brother of Bob Chatt and I have the prizes my grandfather won for running. I am wondering if the Chatt Cup awarded annually at Barnard Castle School is named after either of them.

  6. I wonder if Tom Lakey knew my great grandfather George King born in 1881. I do not know when my great grandfather signed up to the club. However, I do know that he was part of a team that won the English Amateur Cup for Stockton from other family members. I have found evidence, from Stocktons histoy that a man with the surname King played in the clubs 1902-03 season. The season when a chap called Morgan scored the goal that won the cup for Stockton against Oxford, the match was a replayed final at Darlington. George was 18 at the time the Lakey side won in 1898. He could well have been inspired by Lakey and co. Or he may already have been a jnr on the side. Either way the team that won in 1899 were probably his heroes.

  7. Researching Bob CHATT for my friend, and came across this site. He was her great grandfather. Just thought you would like to know that she had his Aston Villa Football Contract for the late 1890″s. He earned £4 per week, and £3 per week in the close season. The contract is now with the Football Museum at Preston, along with another photo. I see that he also played for Stockton and was trainer for Manchester City along with others.

    • He was the brother of my great grandfather John Thomas Chatt. I have just found a photograph of him, and also found out that he was one of ten brothers and sisters. My great grandfather was a runner, and worked for Bowes Museum.

  8. Tom (Fanny Lakey) went on to play for Grimsby Town and lived to the ripe old age of 90 years and succumbed to a second broken hip after a fall while being discharged from Hospital after recovering from his first broken hip. In his latter years he could be seen walking between Tilery and Stockton acting as a bookies runner. Robert Bob Chatt who played for Stockton in the 1899 Final was born in Barnard Castle 1869 went on to play for Middlesbrough Ironopolis, then Aston Villa, he went on to play in the 1895 FA Cup Final against West Bromwich Albion, and scored the winning goal in the first minute. After leaving Aston VIlla Bob Catt was reinstated as an amateur and re joined Stockton FC. He lived to great age and his unique double of an Amateur Cup and FA Cup medal was held in high esteem by the locals. This famous Stockton team was honoured with a 8ft x 4ft Gilt Framed Photograph that was hung on the wall of the Stockton FC Victoria Ground Committee Rooms for decades. Does any one know of the whereabouts of this photograph as I would love to have a copy. It would be interesting to hear from any relatives of any of the other players in the team. or any other information on this Champion team.
