Mural by Zak Newton – Locomotion No. 1

The mural, designed and painted by artist Zak Newton, with assistance from Allison Bentley, graces the perimeter wall of the car park and depicts not only two historic happenings in Stockton, but also ’firsts’ for the world. It represents George Stephenson’s Locomotion No. 1 (the car park is within metres of the original terminus of the Stockton/Darlington Railway and the world’s first steam passenger service) and the other historic first for Stockton is the invention of the first friction match by chemist John Walker. The project was commissioned by Stockton Council and funded by Regeneration, Car Parks, Arts Development and Museum services.

  1. Whatever the worthies of Stockton paid for this, they have a bargain on their hands. Excellent. A real work of art, and a credit to the borough as well as to the artist(s). Let”s have more of the same.

  2. Locomotion No 1 A great start , lets now continue our Pride in THE TOWN THAT CHANGED THE WORLD, not only its railways, our shipbuilding , industry and a 700 year history is second to none. Look to Shildon Darlington and Hartlepool ,all having a magnificent renaissance in the last 10 years.
