There is a good view of the Robinsons water tower in this 1955 picture of the High Street. The picture is from a similar position to the one that I took in 1992 from the Swallow Hotel. I would guess that this 1955 picture was taken from the upper stories of the Empire Cinema.
I”ve just found this website, after searching for a photo on yahoo.com This site is excellent! I”ve passed it onto my friends and family so they can see old photos of where they lived in the 50″s. keep up the good work. Good old Stockton! This picture reminds me of the days I used to walk the High Street looking for bargains!
The lorry in the foreground of this picture is advertising “Somnus bedding”. Interesting to note that fifty one years later the company is still advertising (on the net) and going stong based in Leeds, West Yorkshire.
