  1. This was Hintons before The House of Holland took over the building. Tilston Motorbikes was further up the road next door to the Green Bushes Pub.

  2. This is the old Hinton’s Grocers shop. During the war; I went to Holy Trinity School which was just on the opposite side of Yarm Lane. It was our “Tuck” shop. One thing we could buy was broken biscuits which were very acceptable with sweets being rationed at 3 ounces per person per week! One day at School the dinner staff ran out of Vegetables and the head master went to Hinton’s and managed to sweetheart them in letting him have some bread as the canteen still had some mince, so a few of us ended up with mince on bread. There was very little children could buy; we used to buy liquorice root, Black un-sweetened liquorice sticks. But I am sure that we were much healthier on the war time diet than children are today!
