  1. To Ian Black I remember your mam Norah Black and your dad Ted who was I believe involved with the St.John”s Ambulance or Red Cross, our mums worked together at Ideal Decorators in Bishopton Lane your mum and dad were very kind to my mum after our dad died, your mum and dad had a car and used to take my mum out and often brought her to Guisborough where I now live.

  2. A good picture of this property when it was a lived in house in 1910 can be seen in t240. Hard to believe it”s the same place. The 1910 shot of Rose Cottage can be viewed by typing the name into “Search database”.

  3. Jack Guthrie one of the brothers was at the Richard Hind in the same year as me. I can remember his father once coming to the school and giving a film show. Anyone else from RH remember this?

  4. And my Mother too worked at Ideal Decorations: Norah Black. Guthries always amazed me with the grubby squalor where they could solve any vehicle problems! That”s probably why I went into vehicle manufacturing for a career.

  5. …..and after the Board Inn was “Ideal Decorations” I believe, where my mum, Molly (nee Shread) worked for many years.

  6. The Guthries Taxi Office was owned by the Guthrie Brothers Bill and Jack. Their father was a well known scout leader in his spare time and the garage was once called Rose Cottage. The premises next door and to the right of the picture was Fairless Engineering whose workshops were in Parkin St at the rear of the garage. After Fairless engineering there was Hopes Fish shop and then the Board Inn

  7. There used to be petrol pumps at the right of the picture, which delived petrol across the pavement, by swinging overhead arms, to vehicles at the kerb.
