I remember waiting in the shop doorway, around 1953, for the Evening Gazette papers to be dropped off so I could deliver them on my evening paper round. This shot is taken from the Town Hall side of Mandale Road
My great aunt Francis de Puccio had an ice cream business in New Street in I believe the 1930/40″s. Her daughter was Beatrice – she married David Gascoigne and I think they had a shop of their own in Queen Street. Does any body remember the family, are there any photo”s in existance of their business in New Street?
My mum Brenda Parker was born in New Street in 1931, daughter of Fred and Rebecca. There wasnt much room in the house so the 5 children plus their parents were all in one bedroom. Along the Street were other members of the extended family, the Newtons and Harris”s. The family were here until 1935 when they moved to a bigger house in Diamond Road. This is the only photo I have come across of the Street, it all looks so different now.
