This photograph of the High Street shows Benefit footwear Ltd, the Midland Bank, Gargett & son (the Hat King), Coates & Sidgewick drapers and silk merchants, Marks & Spencer and Boots the chemist c1940s.
Alderman Gargett was Mayor of Stockton c1936-37, he had clothiers and outfitters shop near to the Town Hall. It was the shop to go to for Cubs and Scouts uniforms and regalia, he also stocked school uniforms, blazers ties etc.
This fabulous series of photo”s (t10188 – t10195)was sent to us by a mystery donor. They were all taken at the same time and show one side of the High Street in sections.
This series of photo”s are brilliant, they are not the usual ones that appear in history books about stockton etc. I”ve certainly not seen them before, are they from a private collection ? They look as though they were taken on the same day.
Nice to see Gargetts picked out worked there 1951-1956 until bought out by Littlewoods

The Hat King was Harry Garbutt. I believe he was Mayor of Stockton at one stage.
