  1. I learned to skate on Ropner Park Lake……but at a much earlier year than this. Perhaps early 1940’s? Still have fond memories of the rare winter freeze-up. Screwed in the wooden blade-support at the heel and strapped at the toe.

  2. It was indeed the winter of 62/63, as I had just started going out with my husband then, we have photos of the park that winter with Dave Pattison, and two of his friends from Oxbridge, Dave Gathergood and Tony Bennett. The two Daves lived in Hampton Road and Tony lived in Sydenham Road, all next to the park. It was a bitter winter, as Dave will testify, as he used to have to walk home from Roseworth to Oxbridge after taking me home, the snow being too deep for his usual bike ride!

  3. When I took this photo I remember Peter Dodds and Tony Scott being on the ice and skating. Also skating at the time was Keith James who was a neighbour of mine in Glaisdale Avenue.

    • The Tony Scott that was on the ice was in fact the late film director, brother of Sir Ridley Scott. Tony was a cheerful youngster in his rugby playing days at Stockton rugby club. His movies are regularly shown on TV
