Dacrylate paint supplies is still there. My dad used to run the ‘bargain centre’ at 46 Norton Road. Remember running to Pattons bakers on a saturday for a Cornish pasty.
This is the corner of Queen Street and Norton Road. My grandparents lived in Starkey Street which was at the other end of Queen Street. I remember some of the shops on the block from the late 50″s and early 60″s – King Bros wet fish shop, Bill Beatties bikes, Norton Rd post office, Merediths? bakers next to post office. There was also a drapers shop and butchers. I live in Scotland now so not familiar with area in this photo.
In fact the photo was taken from our Shop steps.
Dicken’s Shop was at 37 Norton Road, later we bought the old Doctors Surgery at no 39, and extended the shop as we where stuck for space, which was stunting our growth, by doubling the size we certainly increased our turnover there.
I worked at our shop along with my Uncle Terence, know to most people as Terry, Mrs Grace and many other staff member, it was a busy shop.
I then moved down to our Portrack Lane premises to run a larger Hardware side than we had down at Portrack, by then the Business was growing due DIY boom.
Hello Michael. I remember the Trade counter at Portrack Lane, next to the timber shed., it was always very busy. There was a chap called Brian Goodhall I remember, I think he had a Moggy Thou, also Malcolm whose surname escapes me. I started at Dickens in 1982, courtesy of Alan Watson, and was there up until the very last Sunday trading with him in 1999. Hope June and the family are well.
