  1. On researching my family tree I have just discovered my grandparents Janet and William Hayes lived at 24 Buchanon Street, Im not sure for how many years they were there but they were definitely there in 1919 and at some point after they ran the Buck Inn at Sadberge. I would love more information on the street or if anyone is related to me out there!

  2. My grandparents, Mary and Percy Picken, lived in I think number 48 Buchanan Street from around 1920 I think. Mary died in 1964 and Percy was there until the late 70s when he died. They had 7 children, 2 boys and 5 girls. My mother was Joan Picken. Her sisters were Marjorie, Betty, Irene and Lilias. Sons were Bert and Gilbert. I recall the cobblers at one end and sounds of the street – bin men, rag and bone etc. I remember a woman called Dot who was close to the children and my grandmother. I revisited it a couple of years ago and was sad to see what had been a thriving street demolished.

    • Hi Robert, I have just posted, your grandparents were there the same time as mine! Mine were at number 24! Ive just started looking into my family tree and as I live in Surrey I have no local knowledge, so if you could point me in the direction of local sources its much appreciated . Thank you.

  3. Such a walk down memory lane. My mum and dad (Sylvia and Jack Hatfield) lived in Buchanan Street from June 1973 to March 2011 though dad died in 1985. They lived at no 74 and it was the regeneration scheme that forced mum out in 2011. Everyone had to go then… end of an era. Half the street had already gone by then and it really was the final push to completely remove all the streets and buildings I remember when I was at school at Mill Lane on Dovecot Street. We moved mum out to a bungalow in Ellerton Street, Hartburn and I’ve not been back since then. All this sort of thing has been going on for the last 50 years as I recall playing in many derelict houses in the Wellington Street area in the early 1970’s and then finally succumbing ourselves in Milbank Street in 1976.

  4. I lived in Buchanan Street from 1948 until my marriage in 1973. As a kid the street was still cobbled and there were still the old gas lamps. We used to fasten rope from the post and use them to swing from. Great days.

  5. The sunleys lived at 56 from 1947 until my aunt Clarice was admitted to res care in 2005. Bill bought the house for, I think, £459, lived there with his parents Walter & Rachel & his sister Clarice. He worked at ICI from 1936 until his death in 67 & was a regular in the music & dramatic club. The family previously had fish & chip shops in Allison St & Victoria Terr(Norton Rd).

  6. My grandparents William and Hilda Broadbent lived in No 59 from around 1927. When Hilda died, we moved in with my grandad in 1972 and I lived there until 1987 and my mum moved out in the late 90s.

  7. My Grandfather, Frederick Birch and his wife brought up ten children at number 51 or 57,I cant quite make out on my mothers marriage cert. This would be directly opposite your Grandmas, Maureen. Fred died in 1961. Next door lived the Soppits. Harry, one of the sons became Head of Head Wrightsons Apprentice School. I can also remember a family called Merryweather a bit further down the street. One of Freds grandsons, David Birch lives in the Sydney area. My mother and father and two of my brothers emigrated in the 40s and 50s, thus there are many nephews and nieces of mine living in N.S.W. and Queensland with Buchanan Street ancesters.

  8. I am interested in information about Buchanan Street as my grandmother lived in no 58 from the late 1930s until the 1980s.

  9. My mother moved into 37 Buchanan St Aprox 1996 – 1998. After her death in 2000 I moved into the house I moved from Stockton 2 years later. I have a lot of fond memories of No37 and I cant believe it is due to be knocked down.

  10. I lived on Suffolk St. in Oxbridge and the top end of the street looked like this with Bay windows while the bottom end of the street didn”t have them. For some strange reason we all assumed the people who lived in the Bay window houses were rich as opposed to those of us at the other end of the street were poor. My Granny lived @ #13, they had indoor plumbing and hot water. We lived in #39 no hot water and outside plumbing . I guess they were rich and we were poor!!

  11. I was born in this street in 1956 and lived there till I married in 1980 my parents still live there and are waiting to be rehoused. It”s a shame that so much of our history is disappearing
