  1. The bottom photo shows North Street in 1981 and can be compared with photos id=2974 titled ‘North Street in Stockton, c.1986. Only minor improvements were made in the five years 1981 to 1986, although the street is much improved now.

  2. I stand corrected Sheila that the street which run from John Street & came out at Howarths light shop on Bishopton Lane, Smith Street was the next one which had Jackson the tailors & the North Eastern pub on the corner. The waste land opposite the Turf Hotel in John Street used to have the frames of the market stalls stored there before they started storing them in the cattle market.

  3. The bottom photo taken on 19/8/1981 is not of Smith Street, but it bears some resemblance to it, so Smith Street is likely close by. Smith Street was photographed on 19/8/1981, probably by the same photographer on the same roll of film as the above. The 19/8/1981 Smith Street photo is on Picture Stockton, along with others taken from a slightly later period and the differences with the above can be seen, eg Smith Street was in much worse shape and largely derelict, with no variation in house/roof height along the terrace.

  4. From Bishopton Road which had shops, houses and the Leeds Hotel behind which was Durham Street. A back lane un-named was between the houses on Bishopton Road and Durham Street. There was then Albert Road from North to South which took you onto Bishopton road and then towards the High Street three rows of buildings, the first row still being Bishopton Lane the third row was facing Smith Street with two back lanes between Bishopton Road and Smith Street. A lot of those buildings became derelict and some knocked down but others were used for various purposes so for the sake of a postal address the unnamed lanes could have had names added at a later date. Today from Bishopton Lane we have North Street, Union Street Smith Street and Middle Street. It is all easily checked on the local maps.

  5. When I was first married in 1961 we had a flat above the newsagent on Bishopton Lane which we entered from the rear and the address was 1 NORTH STREET so don’t know which was Smith St, interesting eh?
