When the ship returned from England to Australia in 2005, the Endeavour Foundation was heavily in debt. The Australian government took over the ship, clearing the debts and installing the vessel as an exhibit in the Australian National Maritime Museum (which is in Sydney).
Living in Perth W Australia it was exciting going to Freemantle and seeing the Endeavour being built. It took a long time to build but was worth the time that the people worked on the ship it seemed that it would never be finished. It was really great to see it launched, with thousands of people cheering. I did manage to go on board while it was docked at the Victoria quay in fremantle. What I can”t understand is why this lovely ship has to be based at Sydney instead of Freemantle were it was made. I was in Stockton in July 2006 and went to see the replica of the Endeavour at the quay side but didnt” get to have a look on board but it was great to see it .
Pictures not too bad, its good to see some updated pictures of the ship. I saw her leave whitehaven for australia and I saw her arrive in Sydney at the end of her voyage home.
You can see my office in the background of that photograph of the Endeavour. We overlook the maritime museum and Darling Harbour. The Bounty replica is normally moored next to the Endeavour along with the James Craig which is a steel hulled clipper ship powered by sail and steam engines. She was built in Sunderland I believe in the late eighteen hundreds.
My wife and I have just been to Australia and seen this wonderful replica of the endeavour in Darling harbour and had our photos taken with it
I have so many happy memories of this ship and her crew. I volunteered as a guide between the years of the first visit to Whitby in 1997 until 2004 when Endeavour was summoned back to Australia. As well as Whitby she visited local ports of Middlesbrough and Hartlepool. The final British port to host Endeavour was Whiehaven in November 2004. On her return journey home she ran aground in Botany Bay, only a few miles from her final berth in Sydney Harbour, ironic when you consider the tens of thousands of miles covered by this small wooden ship during her last major voyage.
