Regarding Heavisides, the printers, I have an invoice tucked away in my wedding album which is from John W. Baker Ltd, 7 Finkle Street. This is dated 28th September 1965. Stephen Chaffer says he worked for Heavisides from 1968 – were the two firms amalgamated by then? I worked at the Halifax Building Society, across the road at number 4 from 1962 until we had to relocate to Dovecot Street in 1969 for the clearance (destruction) of the High Street. Maybe Stephen remembers all the firms moving out – they were mostly solicitors on that side of Finkle Street, plus Clinkards shoe shop, the frontage of which is now in Preston Hall Museum. Incidentally, the invoice shows 36 printed wedding invitations, plus printed serviettes, for the princely sum of £3. 10s. 3d!! My salary at that time was about £30 a month.
4/5 Heavisides and Sons the Printers, worked there from 1968-73. In the top attic we stored some fine wood engravings that we printed posters from, the Horse Races large, beautifully carved you need to see to appreciate. I hope Preston Hall got their hands on the old equipment. The scary part of going through this part of the building was it moved a lot.
