This postcard shows Norton Duck in the early part of the twentieth century. You can see many people gathered around the pond and an electric tram in the background with an advertisment for Vauxs Stout.
The large house in the background and centre of the photograph belonged to the Walford family. My Grandmother used to work there cooking and looking after the children and I would often visit as a small child and be fascinated by the chickens they kept and the wonderful orchard. When Harold Macmillon was MP for Stockton he would sometimes stay there and would ask my Grandmother to cook one of her steak and kidney puddings, the best he had tasted he would say!
I remember the duckpond well. In the forties, we lived in Woodbine House which is not far from the duckpond. I remember my little sister Maisie had to wear specs (which she hated) She “lost” them in the duckpond, thinking that was the end of that. She didn”t know the pond was drained and cleaned periodically. She was reunited with her specs much to her chagrine.

This picture postcard of The Pond, on Norton Green, was posted in 1937 to my late Father.
