Gosh ICI Billingham, my dad did 30 years on the north site and Wilton, he enjoyed his job. So when I came out of the army I joined ICI and was sent to Cassel works. Sadly it was 3 long miserable years for me, I could never get my head around the archaic working practices, I went back into the army as quick as I could
Does anyone remember the chlorine plant at Cassel Works? I was there 1959-1961. Gassed there numerous times, suffering the consequences now. It was my posting following the completion of my apprenticeship. Didn’t stay there long.
I used to drive for Douglas Bros who used to carry hydrochloric acid and sodium hypo from the cassel works site also chlorine drums and cyanide
does anyone remember ray storey who was clerk at the chlorine plant
I remember Ray he trained me on the job, he married Christine, a clerk in the main offices and I remember loading Douglas Bros lorries, Percy Clifts and Burn Bros plus Robinsons.
I am trying to complete a rather elaborate family tree and history and would very much appreciate if anyone has any memories info, etc on two people who worked at the ICI Cassel works. The names are Jimmy Cairns who I think worked in the labs and Marjorie Cairns.
Hi Duncan, is that you? Please reply…
Hi ann, yes they probably would have known each other, as would my uncle, Walter Hind, who had 50 years service in, a lot of them at CCF plant. I think my dad was a foreman or chargehand there, he died back in 1987, I think I mentioned somewhere earlier that I knew Tony Millward from Visqueen and and later his son Ian when he joined on the same shift as me.31/03/2012 14:00:58
Hi
I am trying to find old colleagues of my dad: Dave Martin a lab assistant. He served at ICI billingham/Wilton/Seal Sands/North Tees- nylon plant and ammonia , I’ve probably got mixed up here.
He had a motorbike for work then a 3 wheeler car (Robin) he mentioned a guy called foggy but that’s all I can remember.
Unfortunately he died a year ago and I’m trying to find out about working conditions etc.
Any help is appreciated
Andy Martin
Anthony, my Dad passed in 1997. Likely they would have known each other, my Dad worked there for over 40 years, he retired also in the seventies. My brother, Tony, is now living in Hardwick, as is his son, Ian. 29/03/2012 15:27:27
Would love to know some of the names on the picture, as one looks a bit like my dad, Stanley Malcolm, but not totally convinced. He cycled from Roseworth every day of his working life first to Dorman Long then to ICI, but sadly died in 1977 at the age of 60.29/03/2012 13:02:37
Hi, I think my dad Billy Gardener is back row 2nd in from the right but like you I’m not 100%. He also lived at Roseworth, sadly died in 1973 aged 54. He worked in the Cyanide plant for years. I have good memories of ICI trips and Pantomimes.
Ann, is your dad still with us? If so I was wondering if he knew my dad, George Smith, who worked at the CCF plant for many years up till the mid 1970’s.28/03/2012 20:34:12
Paul Walker – were you at Holy Trinity 1900-1964 S1-S4? 28/03/2012 13:12:09
Ann, I remember Tony well, I worked at Visqueen for 17 years, leaving in 1990, and finally leaving the UK in 1995 to New Zealand. Had a visit back to the UK in 2010 and was shocked to see Visqueen gone.28/03/2012 05:58:51
Tony, and his son, Ian, did indeed work at Visqueen. Tony is now retired to Appleby in Cumbria, he and his wife visit us here in Western Canada on a regular basis.
Not sure about Cassel works, though I love the history and pictures of ICI. My dad I know worked at the CCF plant for many years, any pics or stories from there? My dad was George Smith, my uncle worked at ICI for 50 years. Walter Hind, not sure where in ICI, probably all over at some point in all those years!
I am carrying out some research for a PHD on the history of the Cassel works. Can anybody help me with any details of James Cairns who I gather worked there as a chemist.
Yes. He is a relative. Are you still looking for info?
Thank you John, for the information. I used to work at Rediffusion and many a day I see my dad cycle to and from work, as I was getting a lift to work. I often wondered which route he would take as we would drive along Belesis Avenue.
Susan, Cassel works was on New Road Billingham, it’s the road which runs between the roundabout at Billingham Bottoms and Haverton Hill Road. Cassel works was on the right hand side. My father also worked there on one of the chemical plants as an operator, we also lived at Hardwick. Many times I went with him on the back of his motorcycle to pick up his weekly pay packet and a drum of “HYPO” for cleaning the drains. I think a company called Lucite now run part of this site.
Can some one tell me, was the Cassel works situated behind the ICI offices? My father worked at ICI serving 35yrs service. He would mention Cassel works, the Amonia plant and the packing sheds. He used to cycle from Hardwick to Billingham to work and back. My father sadly passed away 6 Aug 1996…his name was John O’neill, nickname Peggy. Can anyone remember which part of the ICI he worked at?
I worked at cassel works in 1947 as an apprentice fitter. Ray Sylvester was another apprentice fitter who worked there. Larry Parks is an older fitter I remember. Geordy Kinghorn was the foreman. Len Hutton was the union rep. If anyone remembers me please let me know.
I worked at Cassel Works from 1956 to 1987 as at tifffy.
I worked with some of the greatest guys you could wish for,Eff Kinghorn process foreman on MM6/7 was special along with great process operators it was a family working unit everyone helping each other.
