  1. Peter Mcmaster was a very well liked man, he could turn his hand to anything not just bricklaying. He was one of the old tradesmen, drains/roofing/concreting. I met him in the seventies when I moved him home (JS mini removals)from the old Sydney Street in Stockton, he used to live where the new Mill Lane School is now, to Norton, him and his wife Olga. One of best friends I ever had, him and his family. He will be sadly missed.

  2. I lived in the High street. Before I married and I remember my brother”s were friends with Gerry Lumley my brother Stanley Gray worked at the Co-Op butchers with him when he left school. During the war years the Barn at the rear was used for Barn dances, this brings back lovely memories.

  3. Peter McMasters, little man with a big heart. Although nursing his wife he gladly came round to my house to do some bricklaying for me. He was a Master of his craft. Thanks for reminding me of him.

  4. The Staircase in Garth Farm was taken out and altered around but the dark corridor to the back bedroom of the house still remained as I remember colder and a little strange, Quite different than the rest of the house, just as you say D Dawson. My Gr Gr Grandparents were Dawsons who lived in Norton any relation I wonder ?

  5. Mary Lumley was a friend of my mothers at one time and as a small boy I went to play in these buildings which contained chickens and chicks as well as numerous farm cats and kittens my mother went to spiritual meetings there and I dont mean drinking although I suspect they did.The main house had a very narrow staircase which was cold I seem to remember and a presence was felt going up and down these stairs spooky eh

  6. Yes Bob, this is Garth End Farm the Dowson family my brother) lived there in the early eighties and developed the farmhouse and barns around the back of the house it is now two seperate dwellings. I don”t know who the inhabitants are now. It is interesting to hear more of the farms history. I also spent many happy times there!.

  7. You have me a little puzzled over the inhabitants of this property. We were friends of the Lumley family who lived here certainly before the second war and they were still living there when I left Norton in 1951. I pressume the Barker family must have succeded the Lumley”s. Gerry Lumley had a butchers shop in Billingham but served his time with Co-Op Butcher”s Norton. I always understood the property was owned by Sir Frank Brown. Old Nortonian”s must remember the details of the family, they had three sons Tommy, Terry, and Gerry. We had some good card games in their front room many times at the weekend, my favourite was Newmarket 1p per card for picture cards, and one for the pot. A bit of luck you may take home 1/6d. No TV in those days.

    • The Lumley family certainly did live here until the 70’s. Tommy was my grandad! I’ve heard plenty of spooky stories of this house!

  8. This is Garth-End farm , between Fox Almshouses and The Priory and the subject of many interesting articles on the BARKER family which can be found on the Bishopsmill Arch “Dig” site “Fox-Lane” centre, led originaly to Hartburn via Primrose-Hill, Browns Bridge, Ox-Bridge ,Green Lane to the Darlington Coach road
